An anthology of psychological horror for the more discreet, intelligent reader. A subtle, yet potent blend of horror tales to lull you into an uneasy sleep. Think Hannibal Lector but without the scalpel and the chianti. Fava beans are okay.

The Psyche Corrupted edition by Chris Jacobsmeyer Literature Fiction eBooks

THE PSYCHE CORRUPTED presents 19 stories that are a compendium of psychological horror. Each of the stories presents characters whose inner lives are at odds with the conventional world around them--and whose inner lives mask their unraveling psyches. The stories are interesting for the range of styles, approaches, and topics they pursue, but even more so for the ways in which the stories and characters evolve. There are stories like "Indian Hole" that deftly move from the present, to the past, and back again to the present with a smoothness that is totally engaging and never misses a beat. Violence does encompass several of the stories in this volume, but the most interesting stories are the ones that focus in on the psychological horror of a character who is becoming a stranger to reality--isolated by his or her own fears and inability to connect. The most interesting story in this vein is "The Writer's Words" in which an English literature student has been kept sane, focused, and uplifted by the careful ordering and meaning of the words in the books he reads--in this case, as the story opens, the poetry of Keats. As the student's inability to grasp the words he needs to locate himself in the reality of his train trip--from names of towns, railroad stations, products in advertisements--he slowly unravels in all the ways a person would be terrified as the familiar becomes another and very threatening world. He has always depended upon words and his facility with words to organize his world, but now even words fail him, and he is unable to know who he is and whether "I" has any meaning at all. It is an excellent read, and one that will leave the reader with a lingering and disturbing sense of the chaos of a mind loosing its sense of reality.

Overall, this is an interesting and deft collection that showcases talented writers focused on the themes of psychological horror. I recommend it highly.
